New house, slow dryer, and everyone is confused
This is the call we take most often out of the newer south Gilbert builds. The house is eight years old. The dryer takes two cycles. Nobody can work out why, because surely a newer home does not have a dirty vent.
Usually it does not. The problem is the first three feet.
These plans put the washer and dryer in a closet with bifold doors, and that closet is barely deeper than the machine. The only way to get the doors shut is to push the dryer back hard against the wall, which folds the ribbed foil transition hose nearly flat. You have now choked the system at its narrowest point, before the air even reaches the duct.
The duct in the wall can be spotless. It does not matter. The restriction is behind the machine where nobody looks.
Why foil flex is the wrong part for these closets
The ribbed foil hose is cheap, flexible and it is what a lot of installers reach for. It has two failure modes and a tight laundry closet triggers both.
It crushes. There is no structure to it, so the moment something pushes on it, it stays pushed.
And every ridge is a ledge. Lint moving through a ribbed duct catches on each corrugation, which is why a foil hose accumulates faster than smooth pipe carrying the same air.
Rigid transition duct solves both. It cannot crush and the interior is smooth. That is our $98 hose upgrade and in this neighborhood specifically it is the add-on we recommend most, because it fixes the actual problem rather than the one people assume they have.

What the job looks like here
- Inspect the run. We find where it goes and how it terminates, check the exterior cap or roof hood, and look at the transition hose behind the machine. A surprising number of problems sit in the first three feet.
- Work it from the outside with the dryer running. We leave the machine running the whole time we are at the termination, so the air it is pushing carries the lint we agitate straight out of the run instead of letting it settle back down the pipe. It makes a mess outside. We clean that up.
- Work it from the inside. Machine unplugged, hose disconnected, dryer pulled back. We feed the brush through the vent from inside, bring the lint down toward us, and vacuum it up out of the wall rather than leaving it to resettle.
- Both ends on a long run, one end on a short one. A thirty-foot roof run with three elbows gets worked from both sides, because a brush fed from one end alone never properly reaches the far half. A short side-wall run does not need it and we will not pretend otherwise.
- Put it back and show you. Dryer reconnected where it belongs, run to confirm, and the pile of what came out sitting where you can look at it.

The lint screen you clear after every load catches a fraction of what the system produces. The rest of it is sitting in your duct and in the lint trap housing underneath that screen, which nothing empties on its own.

Run the dryer on the air fluff setting and go feel the airflow at the exterior vent. Strong steady air means the duct is clear and your problem, if you have one, is the appliance. Weak air or none means the duct is restricted. That test costs nothing and takes two minutes, and we would rather you did it before calling anyone, including us.
